Our Story

How did VNI come about? Lonie Coulter, VNI’s Master Representative, tells The Victory Story of VNI from his first conversation with Bill Downs and Steve Kushner that laid the groundwork for the company's beginnings.

Our first two years in business have produced many milestones of success. We are a self-funded, debt free company with many millions of dollars in field revenues. Bernard William (Bill) Downs

Founder and CEO

Bill Downs is the Founder and CEO of Victory Nutrition International, Inc. (VNI), an innovative direct sales and referral marketing company. Early on, during his 5 years as the staff nutritionist in a doctor's office in the Philadelphia suburbs, Bill was confronted with an expansive range of diseases and disorders that compelled him to immerse himself in research looking for health solutions 'outside the box' of conventional thinking.

Steve Kushner

Co-founder and Director of Research and Development

Steve Kushner has been involved in nutrition science, homeopathic research, and product formulating for over 28 years. Some of his nutraceutical and cosmeceutical formulations have impacted the national marketplace through such chain stores as GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, Kroger's, and Rite Aid.

Kenneth Blum, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisory Board

In 1990, Kenneth Blum, Ph.D. was the lead researcher who published his discovery of the Dopamine D2 Receptor gene TaqI A1 allele (variant) in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This gene associates with the risk of severe alcoholism and other types of addictive, obsessive, compulsive, and impulsive behaviors, called "Reward Deficiency Syndrome." This gene was originally called the "Addiction Gene", but is now correctly referred to as the "Reward Gene" and, since its discovery, has been confirmed in over 3,000 publications from laboratories all over the world. But, originally, this discovery rocked the addiction treatment world as addictions, which were perceived as a 'software' (psychological) problem, were now understood to be a 'hardware' problem, i.e. an imbalance in the chemistry of the reward sites of the brain and having a genetic basis.

Debasis Bagchi, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisory Board

Starting in the early 1990s, Debasis Bagchi, Ph.D. was responsible for substantially altering the nature and course of the raw material industry forever with his pioneering research and publications on Garcinia cambogia, chromium nicotinate, grape seed extract, resveratrol, undenatured type II collagen, zinc methionine, and many others. In addition to impacting the weight loss industry, these ingredients spawned the creation and growth of, for example, the OPC, polyphenol, and other powerhouse plant antioxidant products. The essence of the 'nutraceutical' category with the birthing of the Supply Side ingredient industry subsequently gained commercial traction with the introduction of proprietary evidence-based ingredients based on his research such as CitriMax®, Super CitriMax®, ChromeMate®, L-OptiZinc®, Protykin®, UC-II®, ActiVin®, and many others. The natural products industry owes Dr. Bagchi a debt of gratitude for his enormous research contribution in validating the benefits of nutraceutical ingredients in dietary supplements.
